TERTIARY PREVENTION - After early diagnosis and therapy we are certainly cured. But pay attention, without particular anxiety, to the so-called relapses! Dr. Giuseppe Imbornone Breast cancer, like so many other malignant tumors, has the ability to spread through the lymph and bloodstream. Only a small part of the cancer cells that reach distant organs (bones, liver, lungs) manage to survive, multiplying, giving rise to the so-called metastases. Fortunately, metastasization requires extremely complex processes conditioned by numerous factors. ❇️ Our advice for women who have had breast cancer. ✅Keep your blood sugar low by avoiding foods with a high glycemic index. A high-scoring food produces a large momentary spike in blood glucose (blood sugar) after its consumption. Conversely, one with a low index causes a slower and more sustained elevation of blood sugar. 🟠 Therefore, refined flours (0 and 00) and white bread should be avoided; potatoes, industrial sweets, very sugary fruit, white rice, sugar, glucose and fructose syrup, red meats and dairy products rich in saturated fat. What to eat instead: 🟢 whole grains, vegetables, legumes, walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds. Again, insulin and growth factors must be kept low Insulin is not only responsible for the correct metabolism of sugars but it is also a growth factor and promotes greater availability of other growth factors such as sex hormones. Therefore, avoid consuming substances with a high glycemic index, limit the consumption of milk which, while not raising blood sugar, increases insulin; also avoid foods that induce 🔴 insulin resistance such as cold cuts, red meats and cheeses in general. 🟠 Growth factors stimulate cell proliferation and therefore have an indispensable function in many cases such as for example in regulating the development of children and in repairing tissues damaged by injury or disease. However, their excess in the body can promote the growth of tumors and a greater likelihood that they can recur after treatment. 🟠 Avoid the consumption of foods very rich in proteins of animal origin and consume vegetable proteins in moderation because, even if to a much lesser extent, they still contain substances such as methionine capable of stimulating the production of cellular growth factors. 🟠 Keep inflammation levels down Inflammation tries to defend the body. Typical is the example of wounds following which inflammation cells are activated which, in addition to counteracting the onset of infections, produce substances that stimulate nearby tissues to proliferate to repair the damage. However, if it is a tumor that causes inflammation, these same substances end up further stimulating the proliferation of cancer cells. A diet free of animal foods (except fish) and preferentially based on the consumption of vegetables (in particular onions, crucifers, borage, green leaves, wild herbs) and unsweetened fruit (avoid figs, grapes) helps to limit the effects of 'inflammation. 🟠 Limit the consumption of polyamines Polyamines are very simple substances however essential for cell proliferation and, not surprisingly, tumors are very greedy for them. An important source of polyamines is fruit and in particular citrus fruits, tomatoes, aubergines and tropical fruits in general (eg bananas). There are actually no scientific studies on humans that demonstrate how a diet rich in these foods is dangerous but it is better, during tertiary prevention, to limit their consumption. Secretariat Dr. Giuseppe Imbornone Giuseppe Imbornone.
